About FBSC

The Foundation for Building Sustainable Communities (FBSC) is a Canadian federally incorporated Not for Profit Organization. Since 2004, FBSC through collaboration has designed programmes, envisioned demonstration projects, and hosted 38 community fairs focussed on education and engagement to promote actions that encourage healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

In 2004, FBSC collaborated with Lady Murrugurra and Stacy Gildenston to create the Women’s Open World Empowerment Movement (WOWEM), which engaged over 60 country participants, and won the United Nations Civil Society Award for Content and Creativity in 2005.

From 2007 to 2019, FBSC hosted the Communty Conservation Fair, Earth Day, Earth Hour, DIY Showcase, Victory Garden Harvest Dinners, Durham Remembers, Peacekeepers’ Day, produce the War of 1812 video series, and operated the Canadian Victory Garden Project -a Demonstration & Teachng Garden for the public

Through the Canadian Victory Garden Project (2009 – 2019), volunteers grew and donated 60,000 pounds of food to food banks, local women’s shelters and Royal Canadian Legion #43.  Each year, the community was invited to celebrate the Victory Garden Harvest.

In 2019, FBSC received Special Consultative Status for Sustainable Development from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and participates in various MGoS events

The FBSC strongly believes in capacity & skills development, community and the environment.  Collaboration is of the key element used to accomplish its goals and mission. In May 2020, FBSC launched the Virtual School of Internet Governance (VSIG) and Victory Garden Institute (VGI) will be launched in January 2024

    What We Do

    Skills & Knowledge Programs

    Education programs to enhance skills and knowledge using sustainable development principles, leading to prosperous livelihoods, healthy lifestyles, and preserves the planet.  Education programs include Climate Smart Agriculture, Internet Governance, Entreprenuership, Personal Development and Embracing Green Living.

    Host Events to promote living green

    From conservation to preservation and repair, FBSC’s history of engaging and educating people to take actions, leads to saving the planet, and money.  Since 2007, FBSC has hosted 38 events focussed on teaching easy and fun ways to conserve, preserve, repurpose, and grow food. FBSC operated a demonstration and teaching garden from 2009 to 2019.

    Community Participation

    FBSC participated as Board members, community representative or stakeholder  in a number of global organizations such as IEEE Smart Village, ICANN, Internet Society, Public Interest Registry, Global Women’s Development Network, and the Global Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network – including the Global Climate Academy

    Local and national Canadian organizations include: Royal Canadian Legion #43, Ladies Auxiliary, and Canadian Internet Registry Agency, City of Oshawa, and  UnityNet

    Project Collaboration

    FBSC has a team of volunteers who are business and community leaders wanting to make a difference.  All of the projects, events and programs have dedicated people who want to make a difference in their community and the world.

    FBSC focus on education, climate change, biodiversity, and healthy lifestyles.

    These challenges serve as opportunities to design programs aimed at innovative solutions, as we endeavor to build a more equitable and sustainable world that intricately shapes the fabric of our communities. By fostering collaboration, prioritizing education, and sharing knowledge and resources, we can pave the way toward a future characterized by harmony and collective well-being.

    Dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals

    In 2015, the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consisting of 69 objectives, providing an inclusive opportunity for people of all ages to contribute towards achieving the Agenda 2030. At FBSC, our programs are specifically designed to empower individuals to take action. As advocates for the SDGs, FBSC actively participates in campaigns aimed at attaining Agenda 2030. With the deadline rapidly approaching, we are committed to making a tangible impact in the limited time left.
